Shri Nihar Ranjan Mohanty is working as Director (Projects &Technical) of National Aluminium Company Limited, a Navratna PSU under Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India since 01.02.2012 for a period of 5 years. He was also holding additional charge of Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NALCO from 01.05.2015 to 26.07.2015.

Shri Mohanty is an Engineering Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Regional Engineering College (Presently National Institute of Technology), Rourkela. He was the topper of his batch in 1980 and was awarded “Sanat Kumar Memorial Gold Medal” for securing the highest mark in B.Sc. Engineering Examination,1980 of Sambalpur University. After completing his engineering, Mr. Mohanty started his career in Larsen & Toubro as GET. Then he served in Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (BALCO) for five and half years before joining NALCO in Dec’1986. While working in BALCO, he received the Best engineer’s award for designing a wheel crust breaker which replaced Russian make technological vehicles resulting in huge import substitution. In NALCO, he held various positions like GM (O&M) and GM (Smelter) etc. before becoming Director (P&T) of company.

Shri Mohanty, while working at NALCO, has significantly contributed towards, technology up-gradation, indigenous developments, energy efficiency, proactive and predictive maintenance systems and optimization of resources. His involvement in quality, environment and occupational health management is commendable. As a part of his present assignment, Mr. Mohanty heads the Projects and Technical functions including Research & Development, Systems & ERP and Business Development activities in the Company. He immensely contributed in preparation of new vision and mission plan of NALCO. During his tenure in Smelter, NALCO smelter achieved 100% capacity utilization and received National Energy Conservation Awards, 2011. He also received the IIM Non-ferrous Best performance award amongst the large integrated plants category instituted by “The Indian Institute of Metals”on 14th Nov 2013 at Varanasi.

Shri Mohanty has successfully steered NALCO to set its first footprint outside the state of Odisha by foraying into the “Green Energy” with the commissioning of its 1st Wind Power Project of 50.4 MW at Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh and 2nd Wind Power Project of 47.6 MW at Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Under his leadership, 160KWp grid connected Roof Top Solar plant in Corporate Office and 100KWp grid connected Roof Top Solar plant in Township at Bhubaneswar have been commissioned. While investment decision has been taken for 1 Million TPA 5th Stream in existing Alumina Refinery at Damanjodi (Rs.5540 Crores) & 2.66 Lakh TPA Caustic Soda Plant in JV with Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd(Rs.1789 Crores), in-principle approval has been obtained for 100 MW Wind Power Plant at two locations in India (Rs.660 Crores).

Several other domestic projects such as 1 Million TPA Alumina Refinery in Gujarat, 0.5 Million TPA Smelter & Captive Power Plant in Sundergarh Dist. Odisha, , 14 MW Wind Power Plant in the mined out area of NALCO’s Bauxite Mines at Damanjodi, 20 MW Solar Power project at a suitable location, Titanium slag plant of suitable size in JV with Indian Rare Earths Ltd,1400 MW Nuclear Power in JV with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd,1.4 Million TPA Alumina Refinery in Andhra Pradesh, Angul Aluminium Park in JV with IDCO are being actively pursued under his guidance apart from exploring the feasibility of a 0.5 MTPA Smelter Plant in Iran/Oman/Indonesia.

After persistent efforts, NALCO has been recently allocated Coal blocks of 200 Million Ton in Angul district & Bauxite mines of 75 Million Ton in Pottangi, Koraput district thereby ensuring raw material security.

Mr. Mohanty has travelled abroad several times in connection with his professional assignment and as part of Official delegation from Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India. Mr. Mohanty is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India), and Life member of Indian Institute of Metals and Indian Institute of Welding. He participates in the Governing Council (Research Advisory Council) of Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development & Design Centre (JNARDDC, an autonomous body under Ministry of Mines, GoI), Nagpur. As a member of Council of Govt. of India’s Committee for selection of Science & Technology projects, he is involved in recommendation of various developmental projects on sustainability like Waste utilization, Product development etc. He is involved in monitoring R&D Projects of JNARDDC and also as a member of SSAG (Standing Scientific Advisory Group) recommends similar developmental R&D projects in the Ministry of Mines. Under his leadership, for the first time NALCO has entered into R& D co-operation agreement with Rio Tinto Alcan & other leading public/private R& D institutions including IIT Kharagpur, IIMT Bhubaneswar & NIT Rourkela. The ongoing projects with IIT Kharagpur for production of tiles from fly ash & Red Mud (Rs.50.4Lakhs) and with NIT, Rourkela for extraction of Aluminium from bauxite by hydrogen plasma (Rs.35 Lakhs) are highly noteworthy. Various other research projects are in pipe line from these institutions. Besides all above, the upcoming NALCO’s Research and Technology Centre at Gothpatna, Bhubaneswar over an area of 18 acres is poised to be only one of its kind in Aluminium sector.

Mr Peri is a Partner in M/s. PriceWaterCoopers (PWC), USA. As a member of the Risk Consulting leadership team, he leads 3 critical initiatives in the firm – building global delivery capabilities for management and risk consulting across the global delivery center network; asset and IP creation and audit transformation.

Mr Peri  is a distinguished alumnus of National Institute of Technology Rourkela, India and has worked earlier with Deloitte, IBM, Reveleus, Hexaware and Coopers & Lybrand/PwC Consulting. Outside work, he  is passionate about teaching and has delivered lectures at Anderson, IIM Bangalore and ISB and is currently involved in establishing the center for Advanced Analytics and Decision Sciences at his alma mater – NIT, Rourkela.

During his 23+ years of consulting career, Venkat has been an advisor at the C-suite and led a wide variety of portfolios in US and globally – CFO Advisory, Finance Transformation, CRM and Customer Analytics, Risk and Compliance and Business Analytics & Optimization. He was also a founding member of Reveleus (now part of Oracle) - a cutting edge product suite delivering integrated banking analytics. Over the last decade, working closely with the C-suite, Venkat has done seminal work in leveraging analytics more extensively in consulting delivering high impact in the areas of: bank restructuring, disease detection, fraud detection, risk based performance, terrorism prevention and anti-money laundering.

Mr Peri  has an innate ability to get the big picture and has been at the forefront of leveraging best practices from one industry to the other. Recognized for his extra-ordinary talent to spot opportunities and blind-spots in the business especially for the C-suite, Venkat is often credited with coming up with portfolio of ideas to address the problems and making the insights and foresights more actionable.
